Ragnarok Publications Reaches for the Stars with New Science Fiction Imprint
Speculative Fiction Publisher Adds Per Aspera Press to Its Growing Family
April 8, 2015—Crestview Hills, Kentucky—Ragnarok Publications, known for their ground-breaking speculative fiction books on the slightly grim side, will soon be exploring a different type of dark matter with its new acquisition of Per Aspera Press, a small science fiction publishing company.
Per Aspera was founded by Jak Koke and Karawynn Long in 2003. Koke will remain editor of all Per Aspera titles, as well as any future titles he acquires for that imprint. Along with him is author/editor Shannon Page, who will continue to work with him editorially, as well as publish her fantasy series, the Nightcraft Quartet, with Ragnarok in 2016.
This will be Ragnarok’s second acquisition, after they welcomed the folks of Angelic Knight Press as their supernatural horror imprint in 2014. Ragnarok is committed to a smooth transition between companies, and looks forward to reprinting some of Per Aspera’s titles under the new imprint with new covers, as well as publishing new works a little later in the year.
Some of the titles acquired via the Per Aspera merge, such as Andrew C. Murphy’s STEEL SKY, will remain under that imprint, while others, such as OUR LADY OF THE ISLANDS by Shannon Page and Jay Lake and WAKING UP NAKED IN STRANGE PLACES by Julie McGalliard, will be welcomed under the Ragnarok banner, depending on genre.
Creative Director and Co-Publisher of Ragnarok Publications, Joe Martin, can’t wait to work with the people from Per Aspera, and is excited about the possibilities this acquisition holds for both sides. “Their mission aligns with ours,” he says. “Tim Marquitz and I are both impressed with the story quality of their titles. Jak has assembled a crazy-strong book list, and the acquisition makes all of us even stronger.”
Per Aspera co-founder, Jak Koke, is enthusiastic about joining forces with Ragnarok. “I am extremely happy that our books found a new home with Joe, Tim, and the whole Ragnarok team. They publish gorgeous, beautifully crafted books. I cannot think of more perfect stewards to take our small press to the next level!”

“McGalliard’s story … [is] really about anyone who has ever felt like an outsider, anyone who has found their ‘family’ out in the world.”
— Maureen F. McHugh, Hugo and Tiptree award-winning author of China Mountain Zhang
“Seamlessly blends Cajun werewolves, religious cults, and Seattle prep schools … I couldn’t put it down.”
— Tina Connolly, award-winning author of Ironskin
“A deeply psychological coming-of-age story which will change how you look at teenagers and werewolves. Damn. Fine. Book.”
— J. A. Pitts, award-winning author of Forged in Fire
“McGalliard picks you up by the scruff of the neck and throws you headlong into the heart of the story. A beautiful debut.”
— Patrick Swenson, author of The Ultra Thin Man
“Beware, child. Behind thee stalks the terrible shadow of thy beast.”
So Father Wisdom had told her since she was very young. Under his harsh appraisal, Self-Abnegation in the Service of the Lord struggles to live up to her name, to quell the rebellious feelings stirring deep inside.
But when Wisdom’s punishment kills one of her sisters, Abnegation flees the cult compound of New Harmony and hitches a ride across the country to Seattle. There she tries to forget her father’s warnings and become simply Abby: a normal, modern teenager who lives with a typical family, wears ordinary clothes, goes to school with other kids, and maybe … maybe even has a boyfriend.
She can’t outrun herself, though, and Abby soon discovers that the beast inside her is all too real. She is dangerous, unpredictable, and powerful in a way she’s never imagined. Can she control the wild, feral part of herself? Or is she forever destined to be blinded by her animal instincts, the monster Father Wisdom always she she would be?
